Location

This role is located at our 680A Davenport Road, Waterloo location.  There may be opportunity to work in a hybrid capacity. 

What You’ll Get To Do

The chosen candidate will become a key member of the Hardware Team at P&P Optica. The Hardware Team is responsible for a wide range of activities including the design and fulfillment of our world-class Spectrometers and Smart Imaging Systems.  In this position, you will be responsible for the optical design aspects of our products and systems including developing and proving your own new innovative designs.  You will also work closely with operations to ensure that production processes, facilities, and equipment effectively assemble and test our products with excellent quality.
Responsibilities for this role include:
  • Provide optics expertise in the development of next-generation, smart imaging products, systems, and accessories
  • Ownership of spectrometer products and components including their design, manufacturing, assembly, and testing
  • Innovating, prototyping, and finalizing detailed designs that meet technical, schedule, cost, and DFX requirements
  • Identifying and developing new technologies that support the continued evolution of our products and capabilities
  • Analyzing experimental results and providing feedback to the rest of the team regarding project progress
  • Producing professional-grade documentation to support the manufacturing, assembly, and testing of our products and systems
  • Participating in the production and quality control of the Company’s spectrometer systems
  • Operating, maintaining and aligning high-precision optical equipment
  • Providing technical troubleshooting of optical, electrical and mechanical systems
  • Sourcing reliable components that sensibly balance cost, performance, and schedule demands
Additional Tasks May Include:
  • Supporting our customer service team to help resolve issues with in-field systems.
  • Supporting production with the assembly and testing of systems.
  • Working with external suppliers and fabrication shops to ensure our design and quality standards are met
  • Occasional travel is required (up to 15% of the time)
  • Some tasks may require lifting up to 25kg

Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 3+ years of hands-on experience in precision optics design
  • Strong ability for experimental design, testing, and data analysis
  • Able to leverage analytics software to automate analyses (ie. Labview, Matlab, Python)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with technical documentation experience
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team

Bonus Skills

  • Food industry-specific experience is a significant asset
  • Able to use Solidworks CAD and PDM software
  • Comfortable with Python programming language
  • Knowledge of Zemax optical design software
